The desire to be beautiful is natural and universal in human societies.  Cosmetics are products of the society and the people.  As the society and people's needs and thinking change, cosmetic products also change to meet new demands.  It can be said that cosmetics are a mirror of the society, because they usually reflect important social changes.  In California, for example, concern for the safety of herbicides and other agricultural chemicals gave rise to the birth of "natural" or "organic" farming in the 1960's.  In the 1970's, long-haired hippies roamed the streets of San Francisco, and natural/organic cosmetics start to appear in small health-food stores in California and other parts of America.  Today, "Organic Cosmetics," a hybrid of skin care cosmetic and organic food, have become a very large market, not only in the U.S., but also in Europe, Japan and in many other nations.  Another class of internationally popular skin care cosmetics today is a hybrid of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, the so-called "Cosmeceuticals"."Beauty Drinks" is another example of a hybrid, a health drink with a cosmetic effect.  In China, cosmetics are evolving with the rapid increase in standard of living.  With expected changes in government regulations, including mandatory ingredient labeling beginning in 2010, cosmetics will change, too.  Moreover, the serious problem of global warming and climate change will affect our daily life in coming years and certainly will also affect cosmetic products, including natural / organic / green cosmetics. In this presentation, development of various types of hybrids and factors affecting changing market will be discussed.
